Super Bowl winner joins as global ambassador and will challenge NFL players to Call of Duty battles.
National Football League (NFL) star Richard Sherman has bought into Luminosity Gaming as a shareholder.
The San Francisco 49ers cornerback has also been appointed as a global ambassador of the esports organisation.
In his role, Sherman will attend live activations for the esports organisation and its parent company, Enthusiast Gaming. In addition, the 2014 Super Bowl champion will challenge other NFL players to team play with the company’s Call of Duty team, which will be streamed across the Luminosity network.
As captain of Luminosity’s esports organisation, Sherman will also help to build out its professional player roster.
Steve Maida, president of Luminosity Gaming, esports division of Enthusiast Gaming, said: “As a globally recognised athlete, and an avid gamer who was featured on the cover of Madden NFL 15, Richard is a perfect fit for us. With over 50 gaming influencers and esports professional athletes, we are looking forward to adding a Super Bowl champion to our roster.”
Sherman added: “As a brand ambassador and team captain of Luminosity, I plan to bring my competitive spirit and love of the game to the esports organisation.
“I am especially eager to challenge some of my NFL rivals and teammates to join me for online matches, streamed on the Luminosity network for all our fans to view and enjoy.”
The announcement of Sherman follows the Enthusiast’s merger with Aquilini GameCo, the parent company of Luminosity, earlier this month. The deal makes Enthusiast one of the largest publicly traded companies in esports.
